Dolly Parton
Underlined vocabulary terms are defined above, followed by discussion questions.
Dolly Parton is an award-winning female country music artist, songwriter, actor and philanthropist. Starting in the mid 1960s, Dolly has worked on over 65 albums and received Emmy, Grammy, BMI and numerous other awards including the distinguished Living Legend Award (U.S. Library of Congress, 2004).
Born in 1946 in a one-room cabin near the Great Smoky Mountains, Dolly was the fourth of 12 children in a poor family. Her parents taught her to have faith, to love, and to work hard. As young as 5 years old, Dolly was writing and singing in the church pastored by her grandfather. Her uncle, singer/songwriter Bill Owens, was one of Dolly’s biggest supporters. When she was 10, she first appeared on TV & radio (The Cas Walker Show in Knoxville, TN), and at 13 Dolly performed at the famous Grand Ole Opry with her uncle and released her first single: “Puppy Love.” In 1966 she married Carl Dean, her loving but camera-shy, husband. Her first full length solo album “Hello, I’m Dolly” was released in 1967. Following the album, Dolly joined The Porter Wagoner Show and made various other TV variety show appearances. In 1976-1977 Parton hosted her own variety show: Dolly!
Her movie career started in 1980 with the comedy “9 to 5”, followed by various roles in TV movies. Dolly also starred in the chick flick “Steel Magnolias” (1989), which grossed nearly $100,000,000 at the box office, and earned several People’s Choice awards. In 1986, Parton took ownership of Dollywood, a theme park in her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee. Dollywood has become famous for not only rollercoasters and rides for all ages, but also for family-friendly live performances such as bluegrass and southern Gospel. The Dollywood Company now owns several attractions in three states.
Dolly is also well-known for charitable efforts, including wild-life rescue, disaster relief, medical education, and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (promoting literacy). This “library” has donated over 100 million free books to young children across the USA, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland.
Dolly Parton has been described as a “country legend.” With countless awards and over 100 million records sold worldwide, she is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Her songs, films, and life story have captured the hearts of generations, yet she remains humble and grounded in faith and family. No dream was ever too big and no mountain ever too high for the little country girl who turned the world into her stage.
